India’s PC Market Witnessed its Biggest Quarter Ever at 4.5 Million Units in 3Q23, According to IDC

INDIA  – The India traditional PC market, inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations, reached 4.5 million units in 3Q23, up 14% year-over-year (YoY) according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The notebook category grew by 13.1% YoY, while the desktop category grew by 19.3%.

The commercial segment was flat, and the consumer segment grew by 26.3% YoY. A portion of the Gujarat education project materialized in 3Q23 to drive the education segment’s growth of 117.5% YoY. The eTailer channel grew 26.4% YoY after four consecutive declines as eTailers geared up for festival sales.

“The consumer segment saw strong traction in 3Q23 after a challenging past four quarters. In August, the Government of India declared a mandatory requirement of import licenses for PCs from October 30th. Though this decision was later put on hold, vendors shipped significant channel inventory to avoid any risks of supply shortages or price hikes, not to mention ensuring sufficient supplies for festival season sales,” said Bharath Shenoy, Senior Research Analyst, IDC India.

Top 5 Company Highlights: 3Q23

HP Inc. led the market with a share of 29.4% as it topped the charts in both the commercial and consumer segments with shares of 34.3% and 25.9% respectively. While good traction in the education and government segments helped the vendor grow by 33.5% YoY in the commercial segment, positive market sentiment and inventory pushes helped the vendor to clock its biggest ever consumer quarter.

Lenovo was a distant second behind HP with a share of 17% as its shipments fell 8.8% YoY. While it managed to marginally pip Dell to second place in the commercial segment with a share of 21%, it was a distant third in the consumer segment behind Asus. Lenovo, however, fared considerably well in the desktop category as it witnessed YoY growth of 32.5% in 3Q23.

Dell Technologies stood third with a share of 14.6% as it witnessed a YoY growth of 3.8%. The vendor was marginally behind Lenovo in the commercial segment with a share of 20.8% while it witnessed a 68.5% YoY growth in the consumer segment as it held fourth position behind Lenovo. The vendor decided not to do heavy stocking, which led to some market share loss but helped maintain healthy channel inventory.

ASUS moved past Acer to fourth position with a share of 12.5%. ASUS had its biggest consumer quarter ever as it shipped more than 500k units in the consumer segment for the first time. ASUS decided to do heavy stocking for festive season sales as it wanted to avoid any supply hurdles due to the import regulations. The vendor witnessed a 42.9% YoY growth in the consumer segment while its commercial segment grew by 69.9% YoY.

Acer Group slid to fifth position behind ASUS with a share of 11.6% despite a strong YoY growth of 20.9%. While the vendor witnessed a 6.7% YoY decline in the commercial segment, its consumer segment grew by a commendable 75.7% YoY. Acer pushed stock on online channels and hence had its biggest consumer quarter ever.

Commenting on the outlook, Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President, Devices Research, IDC India, South Asia & ANZ said, “In the past few months, the PC market has seen a substantial channel push in the consumer segment and to some extent in the SME segment as well. The vendors are now focused on increasing their local assembly mix as government and education projects are expected to prefer locally assembled devices. While this might give a further boost to the government and education segments, a dearth of enterprise orders is a matter of concern as the enterprise segment is expected to decline by over 20% YoY in 2023.”

Notes:

Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end-users. OEM sales are counted under the company/brand under which they are sold.
