Operational Overview

RAFI describes itself as a technology leader and a driver of innovation, especially in the fields of electronic engineering manufacturing services (E2MS) and human machine interface (HMI). They claim that there are only a few companies that cover the whole EMS process from development to logistics. As one of the leading E2MS suppliers, RAFI is among them. Thanks to an international network of expertise with locations in Germany, Hungary, and China, and competence as a system supplier, they handle even the most demanding orders quickly, reliably, and flexibly. Customers rely on RAFI for comprehensive industry knowledge and concentrated engineering expertise.

Company Differentiators

RAFI asserts that they are adept at many technologies, including chip-on-board, injection molding, machining and so forth. They have a global footprint and can deliver customer products worldwide. They concentrate on long term customer relationships and have the financial stability to do so. They have developed many innovations that have significantly advanced the company and the industry itself, including key switches, HMI systems and E2MS solutions.

Strategic Growth Drivers

The explosion of applications for electronics in an ever-expanding portion of everyday life will drive growth for RAFI and the industry in general. They are getting inquiries from many new industries. They expect to expand mainly through organic growth, although acquisitions are being considered. The EMS industry in Europe is expanding because OEMs own some SMT lines but prefer not to continue to invest in manufacturing, preferring EMS to maintain flexibility.

Facility Tour

unnamedEric and Dieter visited the RAFI plant in Uberlingen, Germany in December 2021. This plant was privately owned for 40 years and manufactured components and sub-assemblies. At the request of customers, the range of services was expanded to include the development of customised assemblies and systems, and in 2019 EMS accounted for about a third of sales. The site employs 100 engineers and focuses on human-machine interfaces (HMI) and controls, including systems for agriculture. The company cited material shortages and the struggle for talent as the most pressing challenges for the end of 2021.
