When it comes to cross-referencing, capacitors dominate the conversation. They are the most frequently cross-referenced component, often accounting for 25% or more of the line items in a bill of material (BOM). Add to that the fact that equivalent capacitors are offered by a wide range of manufacturers, and it’s no surprise they generate the highest volume of cross-referencing requests in the industry.
X-Refs.com is a free cross-reference search engine developed by SnapChip Inc. utilizing our propriety SnapChipAI engine. We recently conducted a study of 19 leading capacitor manufacturers, and the results highlight why engineers and program managers struggle to find reliable cross-references. To understand the landscape, let’s look at the primary sources where PMs typically turn: manufacturers, aggregators, and distributors.
Manufacturer Websites
On the surface, manufacturers seem like the most logical place to start. After all, they know their own products better than anyone else. But when it comes to cross-referencing, the reality falls short.
● In our study of 19 capacitor manufacturers, 10 offered no cross-referencing at all.
● Those that did provide tools only cross a limited set of competitors, usually less than half.
● And critically, when you’re working within a single manufacturer’s website, all the results point toward only that manufacturer’s parts.
Manufacturer websites are rarely useful, and then only if you’re staying within that brand, but inadequate if you need a comprehensive list of viable alternates.
Aggregator Platforms (Octopart, Findchips, etc.)
Aggregators are the go-to platforms for part search, availability, and pricing. They excel at bringing data together from across the industry. But when it comes to true cross-referencing, they fall short.
● No aggregator does its own cross-referencing.
● What they typically offer are “suggestions”, not form-fit-function cross-references.
● These alternates are sourced from third-party providers like Accuris, with no transparency about methodology or coverage and are often out-of-date.
For engineers and buyers, this means aggregators are great for quick availability checks but not reliable for formal cross-referencing.
Distributors
Distributors play a central role in the supply chain, so it makes sense to check if they offer cross-referencing tools. Unfortunately, they don’t.
● In our experience, distributors don’t provide cross-referencing at all.
● DigiKey is the one exception: their cross-referencing tool is well designed and easy to use. However, it only works within DigiKey’s franchise lines. If the part you’re looking for isn’t carried in their portfolio, the tool won’t help you.
This limitation makes distributor tools useful in narrow contexts but unreliable for broad, strategic cross-referencing needs.
X-Refs
X-Refs is a new AI driven tool for component cross-referencing. The approach is to provide cross-referencing across the entire industry, not just one manufacturer, one aggregator, or one distributor.
● In our capacitor study, X-Refs successfully cross-referenced all 19 major manufacturers against each other, producing a complete mapping that no other source matched.
● Instead of third-party sources for alternates, X-Refs builds cross-references from first-principles data and AI-driven matching, ensuring both accuracy and transparency.
● The result is a tool designed for engineers and procurement professionals who need confidence that they’re seeing current and reliable options.
X-Refs delivers a comprehensive, unbiased, and fully transparent cross-referencing solution.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for capacitor cross-references, the choices are clear, but the results are not equal. Manufacturer websites are woefully inadequate and self-serving. Aggregators provide only partial alternates, always from third parties. Distributors rarely offer meaningful tools, with DigiKey as the lone exception.
By contrast, X-Refs provides full visibility across the industry, covering every major manufacturer against every other. For engineers and program managers that means fewer blind spots, faster sourcing, and more confidence in the BOM.
Capacitors make up a quarter of your line items and are offered by dozens of competing brands. There’s only one place to go for complete, transparent cross-references: X-Refs.
