TheReadingRoom

by Philip Spagnoli Stoten

For two weeks, I’m guest editor on EMSNOW, while Jennifer takes a well-earned break! For that period, I’m taking the liberty of posting some daily musings. My day generally starts with my own “reading room”, a quick review of my favorite news sources, usually including this publication. Here’s what caught my eye with this morning’s coffee.

  • I read a lot of Hailey McKeefry’s work on EBNonline, she’s a great journalist, an excellent source for supply chain and good friend. In this piece, the second of a two part series, she talks about Tariffs: More Than a Political Strategy.
  • It’s day one of Hannover Messe today and if I wasn’t at an Additive Manufacturing event in Chicago, I’d be there. Here’s a sneak peak of what to expect from this behemoth of an industrial show. HANNOVER MESSE: an action-packed showcase of Industry 4.0, AI and 5G.
  • A costly divorce. A chocolate orange. A cake. A cliff edge. These are just a few of the metaphors that have been used to make sense of what is happening in the UK’s departure from the European Union. Love this quote from an article by Make UK CEO Stephen Phipson, in ‘The Engineer’ asking Does Industry 4.0 offer manufacturers a Brexit lifeline? Two things, if you’ve never had a chocolate orange, get one and try it, they’re delicious! And Industry 4.0 has a lot to offer every manufacturing nation that has the will to make it happen. The tools are there and it’s time to get with the revolution.
  • Oh, and if you’re not in Chicago at AMUG 2019 or in Hannover, then maybe you can go to SMTA Europe’s Electronics in Harsh Environments Conferencein Amsterdam, Netherlands. The conference focuses on building reliable electronics used in power electronics and harsh environments. It starts today, April 2nd. An interesting topic and a beautiful city!!
