SMMT Releases Auto Industry Data: “Hybrid Vehicles Waning, Battery Electric Vehicles Rising” say some

Today’s figures from the SMMT were issued revealing the upturn in electric vehicle sales:

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the UK. Its resources, reputation and unrivalled automotive data place it at the heart of the UK automotive industry.

SMMT is the voice of the UK motor industry, supporting and promoting its members’ interests, at home and abroad, to government, stakeholders and the media.

SMMT represents more than 800 automotive companies in the UK, providing them with a forum to voice their views on issues affecting the sector, helping to guide strategies and build positive relationships with government and regulatory authorities.

Julian Skidmore, Senior Software Engineer, ByteSnap Design commented, “The new figures mean that PHEVs (hybrid) are dying already and the real shift to BEVs (battery electric vehicles) has begun. This is true across Europe and the US already where BEVs outsell PHEVs 3:1[1][2], but it’s the first time we’ve seen it here.

For the electronics industry, the news means that R&D for electronic systems in ICE (internal combustion engine) transport will collapse (this is already happening), but that the electronics industry will have greater control over all aspects of transportation and connected systems, which in turn will create rapidly changing, emerging markets for decades.”
