Operational Overview

SERO offers EMS services ranging from material procurement, production, inspection, assembly, and labelling of products, to warehousing and shipping. All processes and business transactions at SERO are controlled by an advanced ERP system, and their production lines are highly automated, resulting in very high-quality products – zero PPM defect levels on some major projects, reportedly.

SERO GmbH was founded in 1992, went through a management and private equity buy-out in 2018 and now has four facilities: Rohrback, Germany, Netherlands, Semecs’ facility in Slovakia and Florida USA. The US facility was through the acquisition of Syncron, announced at the end of 2021. SERO’s main historical sector is automotive in Germany, and mostly PCBA; they expect to grow the box-build business in non-automotive sectors such as power and industrial B2B electronics.

Company Differentiators

The EMS world is changing rapidly. To ensure that they are still the technology leader tomorrow, they say they are constantly reinventing themselves. They have IPC certified trainers, 100 testing and process engineers and are actively diversifying from their automotive industry foundations. They are careful about new customers, requiring a minimum business level of 2M€. They expect customers to have the ability to grow to this level in a defined period of time. This ensures their financial stability.

Strategic Growth Drivers

SERO expects more consolidation of the EMS industry in Europe going forward. They see new electronic applications developing for automotive and homes that will enable growth for EMS with the right capabilities. SERO will be leveraging the integration of their facilities to drive their future growth strategy. They are getting increased visibility from the OEM community because they have expanded their global manufacturing footprint, resulting in larger RFQs.

Facility Tour

Eric and Dieter toured the Rohrbach, Germany facility in December 2021, meeting with officials from that location. Challenges include a shortage of skilled workers and the component shortages, as elsewhere during this time period.
