SEMICON Japan Dec 17-19: The German federal state Saxony presents itself as a key European location for the international microelectronics industry

The SACHSEN! joint stand at SEMICON Japan in Tokyo from 17 to 19 December will be the meeting point for innovative technologies and Saxony’s top expertise.

As Europe’s largest microelectronics cluster, the German federal state Saxony will impressively demonstrate why it is one of the most strategically relevant partners for Japan’s semiconductor industry.

Ten Saxon companies and research institutions will be presenting the latest solutions from the fields of fab automation, environmental and wastewater technology, advanced packaging, material refinement as well as equipment and process innovations along the entire value chain. Together, Saxony will be demonstrating the technological breadth and depth of its semiconductor expertise.

High potential for cooperation between Japanese companies and the Silicon Saxony ecosystem

Thomas Horn, Managing Director of Saxony Trade & Invest Corp. (WFS), which organised the trade fair stand, commented: “With our strategically important presence at SEMICON Japan, we want to highlight the high potential for cooperation between Japanese technology companies and the Silicon Saxony ecosystem. Saxony is not only Europe’s largest microelectronics location today, but also offers the best conditions for joint business projects with Japanese industry thanks to its high industrial density, excellent research and outstandingly trained specialists. This interaction creates a unique environment in which new technologies can be brought to market quickly, innovation cycles can be shortened and collaborations along complementary value chains can be implemented efficiently. Factors that are of strategic importance for Japanese companies in particular.”

Saxony’s initiative in the area of training specialists is also a special signal for the future, emphasises Thomas Horn: „With the planned new training campus in Dresden and the introduction of English-language dual training for microtechnologists, international standards are being set here for the future generation of semiconductor specialists.“

Saxony’s presence at the trade fair also ties in with the WFS company trip to Japan in October 2025, which was accompanied by the Saxon Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter. The trip included visits to renowned companies and investors. “We want to continue and expand the activities that were established there in a targeted manner. Our aim is to stabilise economic relations between Japanese and Saxon partners and to sustainably strengthen interest in Saxony as a business location”, said Horn.

Direct exchange with innovators and support for transformation in Japan

“We are visiting SEMICON Japan to show how high-energy ion implantation and electron beam irradiation can significantly support the manufacture of modern power semiconductors. Our services enable reliable material modification of electronic components, making them faster and more energy efficient. At the trade fair, we seek direct dialogue with innovators who want to outsource demanding implantation steps. This is how we are shaping the next generation of robust power devices together,” says Dr Roman Böttger, Chief Operating Officer Ion Technology at HZDR Innovation GmbH as an exhibitor.

Japanese companies in the industry in Saxony

Saxony’s attractiveness for Japanese companies is also emphasised by recent relocations and investments by suppliers and technology partners in the semiconductor ecosystem. For example, the European subsidiary Murata Machinery GmbH Europe (Muratec) has decided to set up its first European training centre in Dresden. In future, the 70 employees of the partner company InSeCoTec, as well as employees of customers, will be trained there in the use of high-precision automation technologies. Horiba Ltd. also recently opened its own office in Dresden. The measuring equipment manufacturer specialises in analysis technology in the chip industry. The company EBARA Precision Machinery Europe, which manufactures equipment for semiconductor production (e.g. pumps), is already well established.

When deciding in favour of Saxony as a business location, companies can count on the support offered by Saxony Trade & Invest (WFS) when setting up in the region and are also assisted with their integration into the Saxon innovation ecosystem. Based on the specific company requirements, WFS offers individual information packages on regions, locations, industries, markets, labour, funding programmes, suppliers and the research landscape, for example, and supports the companies through to the final project implementation with over 30 years of expertise.
