How’s Business? A Look at OEM Performance in 2022

Bishop & Associates tracks sales and profits of 13 market sectors and more than 120 companies that are major users or sellers of electronic connectors. The objective is to determine how selected electronic markets have performed, identify sales and profit trends for forecasting purposes and monitor company performance within market sectors.

The following table provides the 2021/2020 percent change in revenues and the first half of 2022 versus the first half of 2021 sales and percent change in sales by market sector.

For the period first half 2021 versus first half 2022, all market sectors except mil/aero, computers, peripherals and consumer saw year-over-year sales increases. The largest increase was in semiconductors, where sales increased 18.4 percent year over year, followed by distribution and instrumentation both at 12.6 percent.

As a note: This database is not static. Companies are acquired or go into bankruptcy; thus, their financial data is no longer available and they are removed from the database. These types of activities occurred frequently in the past and, because of this as well as additions we have made to the database, it is not possible to directly compare current numbers to numbers referenced in past Bishop “How’s Business? OEMs.” These analyses are meant to be used as a relative measure of market sector performance. The following pages display the top three market sectors by first half 2022 sales in detail, including the companies selected for each sector.

Telecom/Datacom Equipment Sector

The telecom/datacom equipment sector recorded a sales increase of 18.1 percent in 2021. Sales for the first half of 2022 versus the first half of 2021 were up 6.9 percent year over year. Net income as a percent of sales totaled 20.7 percent for the period, up 12.1 percent year over year.

Quarter-to-quarter (2Q 22 versus 1Q 22) sales decreased 9.8 percent. Year over year, sales increased 6.9 percent in the first half.

Automotive Equipment Sector

The automotive equipment sector recorded a sales increase of 16.0 percent in 2021. Sales for the first half 2022 versus the first half 2021 were up 2.8 percent year over year. Net income as a percent of sales totaled 8.1 percent for the period, up 8.7 percent year over year.

Quarter-to-quarter (2Q 22 versus 1Q 22) sales decreased 0.6 percent. Year over year, sales increased 2.8 percent in the first half.

Computer Equipment Sector

The computer equipment sector recorded a sales increase of 2.9 percent in 2021. Sales for the first half of 2022 versus the first half of 2021 was down 1.0 percent year over year. Net income as a percent of sales totaled 7.6 percent for the period, down 5.3 percent year over year.

Quarter-to-quarter (2Q 22 versus 1Q 22) sales decreased 3.5 percent. Year over year, sales decreased 1.0 percent in the first half.
