Eric and Dieter are in Switzerland where they report on visits to Hengartner Elektronic AG and Variosystems. The first, as Eric comments, represents a smaller, one-facility EMS company that has developed specialized manufacturing capabilities that are truly unique. They refer to their facility as a product innovation center, and the niche they have carved out for themselves is to focus on start-ups where they support design to prototype to production for new products.

The second company, Variosystems, is a mid-sized global company that is dissatisfied with the term ‘EMS’ and suggested they be called an ‘electronic service partner’ or ESP. Dieter thinks that is pretty accurate. The two report what they learned about Variosystems’ strategy of standardized processes across all facilities in all regions, and much more.
