Electric car assembly in Mexico to triple by 2023
MEXICO – Electromobility in Mexico is growing and both its production and sales are booming in 2023. The production of electric vehicles in the country alone is expected to increase by 179% by the end of the year, while sales could more than double with the arrival of new Chinese brands.
According to an analysis by Directorio Automotriz’s Business Intelligence Area, Mexico will have produced around 221,970 electric vehicles by the end of 2023, which would represent an increase of 179% compared to 2022, where models such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, will be the most produced in the assemblers installed in the country.
Last year, the assembly of electric vehicles represented 2.4% of the total number of light units assembled in the country, but this year that proportion could exceed 6%.
Meanwhile, the commercialization of 100% electric cars aims to increase growth to triple digits, since as of April several Chinese brands began selling green units in Mexico, such as BYD, which wants to sell 5,000 electric cars and ARRA another 2,000 by 2023.
From 2020 to 2022, the automotive industry in Mexico has produced more than 157,730 electric cars, of which 79,471 units were assembled in 2022, where the model that capitalized the market was the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 77,897, followed by the JAC E 10X with 911 units from JAC Mexico (Giant Motors Latin America).
But other brands have decided to change the production of their vehicles and have found a strong ally in Mexico.
Currently, the northeast accounts for 41% of the country’s electromobility supply, while the Bajío region accounts for another 40%, with Guanajuato being the leading entity in the region.
According to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), the sale of 100% electric cars in Mexico will increase 394% by the end of 2022, when the industry will sell 5,631 units compared to 1,140 cars in 2021.
