Taiwan's FPD Industry Engages in Large-Scale Personnel Recruitment

Jul 06, 2012

With the upturn of their capacity utilization rate, Taiwan's flat panel display (FPD) firms may be able to turn around their operation and score a booming business in the second half, as evidenced by the large-scale personnel recruitment plan of Chimei-Innolux and AU Optronics, Taiwan's two leading FPD firms.

Chimei-Innolux announced yesterday (July 3) a plan to recruit 3,000 persons in the second half, while AU is also expected to hire 2,500 new staffers this year, adding up to 5,500 persons, the largest personnel recruitment program of the industry in the wake of the global financial tsunami.

Despite their lackluster performance in the first half, several photovoltaic firms, including Solartech Energy, Sino-American Silicon Products, Green Energy, and Gigastorage, plan to recruit 550 new staffers.

LED firms, such as Epistar, will start looking for new staffers in the second half. Largan Precision, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., and Siliconware also engage in large-scale personnel recruitment, at scale unseen in recent years. The talent hunt underscores business improvement in the upstream sector of the electronics industry.

A manager of Chimei-Innolux expressed that the company needs to recruit 3,000 persons in the fields of manufacturing process, R&D, business, administration, and management.

The first round of personnel recruitment event of Chimei-Innolux this week will be presided by Yang Hung-wen, assistant vice president of the company's touch-panel business group. Chimei-Innolux will spend NT$30 billion in capital outlay this year, including NT$2-3 billion for touch panel, whose capacity will double to 200,000-220,000 pieces a month by the end of this year. Touch panel will be one of the product lines with the highest growth rate this year. Chimei-Innolux has global workforce of over 100,000 now, including 20,000 in Taiwan, which will rise to 23,000 by the end of this year.

AU Optronics will recruit over 2,500 persons this year, mainly engineers in the fields of AMOLED, 3D, touch panel, and photovoltaic. The company now has a global workforce of 45,000.
