Upcoming SEMI Europe Symposium to Confront IC Industry Challenges

Feb 13, 2012

Chip-makers, semiconductor equipment manufacturers and IC materials suppliers to thrash out industry issues in February in Munich

With complex challenges and opportunities in the semiconductor industry approaching quickly—especially with FinFET, EUV and 450—industry leaders will convene at the 25th edition of the International Strategy Symposium Europe (ISS Europe) organised by SEMI Europe. ISS Europe will take place 26-28 February 2012 in Munich, Germany.

ISS Europe 2012 covers all sectors and areas of the micro- and nano-electronics supply chain. At ISS Europe, equipment and materials companies, chip-makers, and their suppliers will collaborate and work through critical challenges including fab financing, investment in 450mm, and next-generation lithography.

The program agenda includes presentations on the critical trends, issues and developments facing every senior leader in the industry. Gabriel M. Crean, VP for technology at CEA, will give a keynote on "Key Enabling Technologies for a Competitive Europe: Challenges and Solutions." Another highlight is an Executive Panel "Competitive and Advanced Manufacturing in Europe" moderated by Heinz Kundert, SEMI Europe. The panelists include executives from GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Infineon, Intel, Robert Bosch Venture Capital, Texas Instruments, and the European Commission.

Speakers and presentations at ISS Europe 2012 include:

Leading Analysts, Financial and Thought Leaders:
-- Claus Schmidt, Robert Bosch Venture Capital, will bring an investor's point of view, looking at the process by which ideas and patents translate into successful products.
-- Ed van den Kieboom, Plastic Electronics Foundation, will discuss the opportunities and challenges in Plastic Electronics and look at the role of European stakeholders.
-- Bill McClean, IC Insights, will argue the industry has entered uncharted territory for which there is little or no precedent.
-- Malcolm Penn, Future Horizons, will look at the drivers: the economy, unit demand, capacity and ASPs.
-- Luc van den Hove, IMEC, will suggest that the success of countries, companies and continents depends on bringing the best brains and technologies together with innovation occurring at the boundaries of disciplines and nations.
-- Nikolay Lisay, Angstrem-T, will talk about the revival of the Russian microelectronic industry and dealing with an "IC industry outlook in an uncertain economy".
-- Beatrice Shepherd, Frost & Sullivan, will present the opportunities in the semiconductor industry in Russia
-- Carl-Christian Buhr, Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Neelie Kroes, will give a snapshot of Key Enabling Technologies in the Digital Agenda and other EU policies.
-- Willy Van Puymbroeck, European Commission. will present the "Report of Benefits and Measures to Set Up 450mm Semiconductor Prototyping and to Keep Semiconductor Manufacturing in Europe"

Leading Manufacturers and Technologists:
-- Paolo Gargini, Intel, will discuss "Future Transistors… Options and Challenges."
-- Rutger Wijburg, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, will give a manufacturer's view, arguing that mobile device makers need the most advanced processes which require the closest collaboration between fabless companies and foundries.
-- Michael Hummel, Texas Instruments, will share how TI makes semiconductor manufacturing in Europe a sustainable investment.
-- Reinhard Ploss, Infineon, will unveil key issues with power semiconductors and the constant drive to improve with technologies such as 3-D integration, new substrates like SiC or GaN, power copper for interconnect and packaging.
-- Ari Komeran, Intel Israel, will look at how innovation is fostered by partnership and how sustainable business models depend on industry/academia/government partnerships.
-- Benedetto Vigna, STMicroelectronics, will address "MEMS: New Leadership from the European Semiconductor Industry."
-- Frits van Hout, ASML, will consider the lithography dilemma. ASML continues to develop immersion lithography scanners and EUV lithography, getting ready for the next decade of shrink.
-- Marc Corthout, XTREME Technologies, will report on EUV sources for volume production in the 24/7 regime of a fab environment.
-- Tudor Brown, ARM, will address the problems of creating easy-to-use high volume consumer products which are very complex to make-- looking at the system design challenges and the changing requirements on the supply chain.
-- Bas van Nooten, ASM, will report on the European Equipment and Materials industry which decided to found a 450mm dedicated initiative, EEMI450, and releasing 450mm Equipment & Materials Initiative White Paper.

ISS Europe is the premier conference for executives across the semiconductor supply chain. This unique high-level event provides a dedicated forum to meet industry peers, share knowledge and develop strategies for new, and more competitive, business models. ISS delivers top-level industry speakers, market analysts and economists, who debate, challenge and provide ideas on technology, market intelligence, financial trends, business models and end-user applications.
