Dell fires in Texas & hires in Taiwan
Mar 13, 2003
According to a story from Dow Jones Newswires on The Wall Street Journal website, Dell Computer has laid off 140 employees from its product development group in Texas. Although the move was described as "part of the routine ebb-and-flow of employment at a major corporation," it comes at a time when Dell is aggressively hiring for its new design center in Taiwan.Dell Taiwan was unavailable to comment on any potential relationship between the loss of jobs in Texas and the new opportunities in Taiwan. In the March edition of Taiwan-based CommonWealth magazine, Dell posted a full-page advertisement offering 26 job openings at its Taiwan Design Center (TDC). The openings include four executive positions at the director level, eight managerial positions and 14 engineering positions covering the full development cycle of notebooks, PDAs, servers, and network switches and hubs. However, the "No Vacancies" notices on the English and Chinese careers sections of the Dell Taiwan website may disappoint potential employees. The design of the advertisement and awkwardness of the English suggest that it was done in a rush and may not have even been approved by the US office. Without comment from Dell, this is purely speculation, but it might suggest that Dell Taiwan is under pressure to find qualified people without making too much noise. The "the" in "TDC is the major part of Dell’s globalization effort" may simply be an English slip, where an "a" might have been more appropriate, or it could indicate the imminent promotion of Dell’s Taiwan operation in the company’s global organization.Source: DigiTimes
