Taiwan BenQ Reports Soaring Net Profit in Second Quarter Taiwan's largest maker of mobile phones, on Thursday said its second-quarter net profit more than doubled from a year ago, largely due to robust shipments of handsets and projectors. BenQ, which counts Motorola Inc. as a major customer, said net profit in the three months that ended June 30 was 2.97 billion New Taiwan dollars (US$88 million). The company's handset shipments totaled 5.4 million units in the second quarter, up from around 4 million units in the January-March period. However, the second-quarter net profit was slightly lower than the first quarter's NT$3.07 billion (US$90 million). The second quarter is traditionally a relatively slow period for Taiwanese tech companies. BenQ is Taiwan's largest manufacturer of mobile phones and computer peripherals on both a contract and own-brand basis. Consolidated revenue for the April-June period was NT$42.06 billion (US$1.22 billion), up 69 percent from a year ago. BenQ said it expects third-quarter revenue to be flat compared with the previous quarter.
