NPL consults with industry advisors on new materials programme

Aug 03, 2004

The three combined DTI (Department of Trade & Industry) and industry funded materials programmes at NPL are formulated on a rolling basis of one every year.

The current programme is focusing on processing. The programme is envisaged to include a significant part based on electronics interconnection areas as well as more forward looking areas in functional, nano and biomaterials. The electronics project selection meeting was well represented with vibrant and incisive discussion helping to clarify the benefits of some key projects over others and lead-free reliability research was prioritised by the group.

The resultant 66 projects were then voted on in a web and workshop forum, with 160 and 110 people from industry taking part respectively. The prioritised list of projects will now go forward to the DTI for final selection.

More details of the formulation process can be found at www.npl.co.uk/processing and further information from Dr. Chris Hunt chris.hunt@npl.co.uk
