Quanta Computer will ship around 100,000 units of Siemens-branded ST55 camera phones for Germany-based wireless carrier T-Mobile International this month, according to sources.Quanta declined to comment, saying it does not discuss its clients and orders. The ST55 is Siemens’s second camera phone and the first to offer VGA resolution. It features a 16-bit 65,000-color TFT LCD panel, a 4¥ zoom lens, MMS and Java support, GPRS Class 10 and a WAP 2.0 compatible microbrowser. Siemens’s first camera phone, the MC60, is capable of capturing images at a CIF resolution.According to sources, Quanta began small shipments of the ST55 for T-Mobile in June, and it is very likely that the model is a substitute for a Microsoft smartphone. T-Mobile in May announced that it decided to shelve the launch of its Tanager-codenamed smartphone, made by High Tech Computer (HTC), for an unspecified time.It is not the first time that Quanta and Siemens have worked together. According to earlier reports, the Taiwanese manufacturer began shipments of the 8008/CL50 handset for Siemens last year, targeting the Asia market. Production of the model was recently terminated, sources added. In late 2002, Quanta was to manufacture a Pocket PC for Fujitsu-Seimens, but had to halt production due to a dispute between Fujitsu-Siemens Computers and Casio Computer over technology ownership, according to sources.Quanta shipped nearly one million handsets last year and expects to ship five million to seven million units this year. It also ships Panasonic-branded handsets. The SL55 camera phone will be available across Europe from August.Source: DigiTimes
