Motorola closing Illinois repair center, laying off 50

Oct 24, 2003

Motorola Inc. intends to close a repair and logistics center in Rockford, Illinois, and consolidate its operations with another facility 60 kilometers (40 miles) away, a move expected to result in about 50 layoffs. The move will be completed by March 2004, spokeswoman Faye Bergemann said Thursday. About 500 people, including more than 400 Motorola employees, work at the Radio Support Center in Rockford as technicians, technical assistants and in various support services. More than 275 of them will transfer to the Elgin, Illinois, facility and about 50 will be eliminated, the company said, citing "operational efficiencies." The approximately 175 other workers will be shifted to Motorola suppliers, around the United States. The Rockford facility opened Sept. 23, 1996. The center provides repair services and logistics for two-way radios and other wireless communications devices. Source: Associated Press
