Compal Electronics to ship color CDMA handsets to US
Jul 28, 2003
Compal Electronics is likely to begin shipments of a new color CDMA handset to either Sprint PCS or Verizon Wireless, as the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved its clamshell handset. It appears that this model, codenamed VC7C, may be RUIM (removable user interface module) factory upgradeable since the mechanical design has a space for a SIM card. In the past, CDMA phone numbers have been factory programmed into the CDMA module, making SIM cards unnecessary. This may be an important factor for phones designed for the US market since number portability will come into effect on November 24.Vacom Wireless is Compal’s South Korean subsidiary, handling CDMA handset design and development.Compal manufactures CDMA handsets for China’s Datang Telecom Technology and Eastcom, which supply to China Unicom, China’s only CDMA network carrier.Source: DigiTimes
