Foxconn might become the head of Taiwan ODM motherboard makers, says paper
Jan 02, 2008
With Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) having recently landed orders to produce own-brand motherboards for Intel, while it is also competing with Pegatron Technology, the spun-off ODM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, over Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) desktop PC orders, it has shown that the maker is eager to achieve the number one spot in the motherboard manufacturing market, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
Asustek Computer shipped around 59 million motherboards in 2007, with around 46 million on an ODM basis, and so will be taken over by Pegatron in 2008. Since this figure is not far from Foxconn's shipments of 45 million, and the company has much longer history in the desktop PC ODM market, Foxconn could expand its desktop ODM business to take Pegatron's number one position, according to the paper.
