Outsourced LCD TVs account for 23% of world's total shipment in Q3
Dec 07, 2007
Global shipment of liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs amounted to 20.1 million units in the third quarter of this year, with 23% outsourced from contract suppliers all around the world. The ratio is expected to exceed 30% next year, according to a report issued by DisplaySearch.
Among brands of LCD TVs, Dell, Grundig, HP, Polaroid, Vizio, ViewSonic and Westinghouse have totally farmed out their production. Some others have gradually increased outsourced production, such as Philips and Hitachi, which pushed up outsourced productions to 60% and 20%, respectively, in the third quarter, thus benefiting their contract suppliers greatly.
At present, the world's major contract suppliers of LCD TVs include TPV Technology Ltd., Proview Electronics Co., Ltd., Jabli Circuit Inc., Amtran Technology Co., Ltd., Wistron Corporation, Tatung Co. and Kolin Inc.
Of them, TPV, which mainly ships LCD TVs to Philips, still led with a market share of 19.9% in the third quarter. Proview, now Polaroid's contract supplier, has allied with Tatung and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd., a Taiwanese supplier of display panels, smoothly unseating Amtran as the world's No. 2 contract supplier in the quarter.
Jabil came third in the quarter, with a major client Philips, and Amtran, supplying LCD TVs for Vizio, fell to the fourth place.
On the other hand, according to statistics compiled by DisplaySearch, suppliers of display panels all around the world shipped 23.7 million units for use in LCD TVs in the third quarter, with a margin of 3.4 million units against LCD TV shipment of 20.3 million units posted in the same period.
In light of production costs, TV makers have tended to widely adopt LCD panels in 26-inch and below LCD TV, especially in wide-screen models, and shipped two million units of such models in the third quarter, sharply surging from 900,000 units in the second quarter.
Among brands still turning out LCD TVs in house, Philips places orders for display panels mainly with Korea's LPL, Samsung with Taiwan's Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. and Chunghwa Picture, Sony with AU Optronic Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. In fact, display panel suppliers, except Chi Mei, are inclined to heavily rely on orders from major clients, usually with 60% of total shipment to them, according to DisplaySearch.
