Report says Asustek to lay off workers

Dec 13, 2006

Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦), the world's largest motherboard maker, yesterday said that it would continue to "adjust its manpower structure in Taiwan in an attempt to increase competitiveness and to stay in line with its global strategies."

The company made the filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday, in response to a report from the Chinese-language United Daily newspaper that it was planning to lay off staff at its factory in Taoyuan.

Asustek made over 300 factory workers redundant at its Beitou plant last week, as it continues a strategy of gearing local operations toward the areas of marketing and research and development, while switching labor intensive jobs to China.

Asustek was punished with a fine of NT$100,000 (US$3,076) by the Taipei City Bureau of Labor Affairs due to late official notification of the massive staff layoff.
