IBM ThinkPad G notebooks shipping from Quanta
Apr 29, 2003
Quanta Computer recently started shipping 20,000 to 30,000 ThinkPad G notebooks per month for IBM, sources said.Quanta declined to comment on the report. The orders, landed by Quanta last July, originally were expected to be part of IBM’s ThinkPad A series and ship in the fourth quarter of 2002.Launched on April 22, the ThinkPad G series is IBM’s first foray into desktop-CPU notebooks. Start at a weight of 7.5 pounds, they come equipped with a choice of Intel Pentium 4 or Celeron processors and 14- or 15-inch TFT LCD screens.According to IBM, the series is aimed at users who require occasional mobility and is suited for small- to medium-sized businesses, schools and universities, and government agencies. In the past, IBM did not rely heavily on notebook contract manufacturers. It produced over half of its notebooks on its own. It also contracts notebook production from Wistron and LG-IBM, a South Korean joint venture of LG Electronics (LGE) and IBM, sources said.Source: DigiTimes
