SMTA International offerings on lead free and environmental compliance

May 15, 2006

SMTA is again co-locating its annual conference, SMTA International, with the Assembly Tech Expo (ATExpo) show this fall at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois (Conference: September 24-28; Exhibits: September 26-28).

Organized by the SMTA, many events are planned for industry professionals who have an interest in lead-free soldering technology and environmental compliance issues.  In order to help industry professionals understand the challenges of lead-free, this year's event will feature the following lead-free specific offerings: 10 courses, close to 60 technical papers, the ever-popular Lead-free Soldering Symposium, and other special events.

The short courses will be on the following topics:

- Lead-free Reliability
- Lead-free for Harsh Environments
- Lead-free Manufacturing/Troubleshooting
- Lead-free vs SnPb
- Reality of Reliability of Lead-free
- Guide to WEEE and RoHS Assembly
- Backward Compatibility
- Lead-free Selective Soldering
- Lead-free Reflow With Convection
- Lead-free Rework

Organized by Dr. Paul T. Vianco of Sandia National Labs, the Lead-free Soldering Symposium will consist of technical sessions organized by the Joint Council on Aging Aircraft / Joint Group on Pollution Prevention (JCAA/JCPP) Lead-free Solder Consortia Project, as well as sessions on Process for Lead-free Implementation, Lead-free Fatigue and Lead-free Reliability.  It will provide the latest information on materials selections, lead-free processing techniques, as well as critical aspects of lead-free interconnection reliability, including backward/forward compatibility, moisture-level effects, and failure analysis techniques.

In addition, this year's conference will include a new full day workshop, “Beyond RoHS and WEEE: Preparing for the Energy-Using Products (EuP) Directive & Design for Environment,” a program co-sponsored by the SMTA and Technology Forecasters, Inc. (TFI) and The GoodBye Chain Group.  The workshop is led by Harvey Stone of The GoodBye Chain Group, and Pam Gordon of Technology Forecasters, Inc. Attendees will learn leading methodologies, strategies, and tools for design for environment, and they are encouraged to bring a product sample for hands-on disassembly experience.

Lead-free, SMT, RFID, Process Control, Flip Chip, Chip Scale, BGA, RoHS Compliance, Automotive and more, SMTA International is dedicated to surface mount, advanced packaging, and related technologies.  For developing information on SMTA International, visit the event Web site on-line at smta.org/smtai or contact SMTA executive administrator JoAnn Stromberg: 952-920-7682 or joann@smta.org.
